Mitzi's Message: Putting Women's Health on the Ballot and in the Forefront

October is a busy and meaningful month for women’s health. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness month, Domestic Violence Awareness month, and Menopause Awareness month. It’s also the month leading up to the November elections - a good reminder that women’s health is affected by multiple factors and that advocating for our health is important. We're hosting a webinar on October 26th that you won't want to miss; you can find details below.

One of the impacts of the pandemic on health was that many women postponed preventative care, including mammography. We offer a number of resources on breast cancer awareness including articles and podcasts as well as an interview where we spoke with Kaitlin Christine, CEO and Founder of Gabbi, an app that aims to predict breast cancer risk in women and interviewed Dr. Karen Anderson, a leading breast cancer scientist.

Another consequence of the pandemic was an increase in domestic violence. About 1 in 4 women have experienced violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime.  If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, you can call or text the National Domestic Violence hotline at 1-800-799-7233 to reach an advocate who will offer help. The Violence Against Women Act was recently reauthorized which establishes new policies and protections that impact on women’s health, another reminder that policies—and politics—greatly impact on the health of women.  You can read more information and resources on domestic violence in this article on our blog.

Featured Article: The Impact of Menopause in the Workplace

Women who experience symptoms of menopause are often left confused, overwhelmed, and unsure of how to navigate this transition period of their life. Additionally, menopause is rarely discussed in terms of how it may impact women in the workplace. The lack of education and support for women experiencing menopause can also cause women to feel embarrassed or stigmatized. As a result, employers are often unaware of how this phase of a woman's life may alter her productivity, motivation, and physical and mental health.

Featured Article: How to Navigate the Transition of Perimenopause

It probably comes as no surprise that, over their lifetime, women experience many ups and downs during their overall reproductive journey. From puberty to the emotional and physical changes during childbearing and menopausal years, women are often overwhelmed by the ongoing adjustments in their bodies. One of the stages that is often not talked about is perimenopause, the natural transition that marks the end of fertility.

Webinar: Putting Women's Health on the Ballot

Join us on October 26th at 10:00 am PST / 1:00 pm EST as we discuss the many ways that women's health is affected by policy decisions and why your vote matters.  We'll talk about funding for women's health research, access to care, health insurance coverage, support for innovation, violence against women and more.  We'll also talk about how you can make your voice heard at the ballot box and beyond.
