WOMEN AND AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE: 30 YEARS AFTER THE NIH REVITALIZATION ACT

March 9th, 2023 | 10:00am PST / 1:00pm EST

June 2023 will mark the 30th anniversary of the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993, which established guidelines for the inclusion of women and minorities in all NIH-funded research. WHAM is excited to recognize the anniversary of this historic Act by hosting a series of virtual (and in-person) events throughout the year, exploring what’s changed, what hasn’t, and where we need to go next.

Despite some advances in our understanding of certain areas of women and autoimmune disease in the last 30 years, the field appears to still be largely understudied and underfunded. Patients see an average of six doctors over more than a four-year period before they get a diagnosis and 80% of autoimmune disease patients are women – that is 40 million women in the United States alone. Patients have also typically already been experiencing autoimmune inflammation for an average of 10 years before diagnosis. Join in for this roundtable dialogue to learn more about where we are today with women and autoimmune disease and where we need to be.
